About

The Repository Value Domain Stack (VDS) is a collection of pre-configured directories.

VDS Description

What are Value Domains?

  • Value Domains are areas where “value is being created or being supplied”.

  • The names are similar to the department names used in organisations (i.e. Design, Logistic, Finance).

The names are derived from the Value Domain Model (VDM) which is a generic model that can be used by SMEs, NPOs, projects.

Parts of the VDM come from the telecommunications industry’s TM Forum Frameworx.

Value Domain Stack (VDS)

The stack is a reference to the set of names which are used, seen as a stack - i.e. on top of each other.

Reasons for using the VDS

There are several reasons why the VDS should be used:

  • Standardisation of directory naming within an organisation.
  • Long term static names - free from the influence of company reorganisation or departmental names.
  • In a start-up or project the stack names help to act as framework for ideas or “things to think about”
  • A foundation for automation.

Use of the utility

The VDS is supplied as a pre-configured directory template to get started quickly.

It can be simply copied across to where it is needed:

  • In a Office°Boxxd the VDS would be installed in the Works directory.

  • In a Product°Boxxd the VDS can also be installed in the Items directory where it acts as a standardised framework for the customer product assets (marketing broschures, info, licensing, etc).

Daily use example

The Works directory is configured with the VDS directories:

  • Team members can place their ideas, calculations, specifications, documents - i.e. their know how in the appropriate directory.

For example somebody who is working in marketing would create a directory under Market (or its short form Mx) called Marketing (or the departments abbreviation) and place their documents there.

An overview of the names

Types of writing

The names can be written in two forms - the short and regular form.

For example the Value Domain Design has the regular form and its short form is Dx.

In the short form version the Value Domain is abbreviated to its first letter followed by an “x”, where the “x” represents any other character (i.e a wild-card).

Use and conflicts

Depending on your use scenario and processes within your organisation, there might be a conflict concerning which Value Domain should be used.

A Value Domain refers to where value is being brought. It does not have anything to do with the size of a department, its name, or the number of objects which are being managed.

One example where conflict can arise is with the functional name “Purchasing”. Companies will generally have their own Purchasing department and will expect to have there own Value Domain. Due to the Value Domain Model structure Px is already being used, and Purchasing belongs to the Logistic domain, i.e. sourcing and bringing it to the user.

Other users might also be uncertain as to which directory they should use.

Tip: It is wise to get a consensus between the users to what should be used at the beginning, so as to save time and friction later.

Documents can later be moved around between Domains when needed.
